今天学习新概念英语第二册39课，老样子，先过一遍课文。

Am I all right

While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor whether his operation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so. The following day, the patient asked for a beside telephone. When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for doctor Millington, when the doctor answered the phone, mr Gilbert said that he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr Gilbert. He asked if Mr Gilbert’s operation had been successful and the doctor told him that it had been. Then he asked  when Mr Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hospital for another two weeks. Then Mr Millington asked the caller whether he was a relative of the patient, ‘No’, the patient answered, I am Mr Gilbert.

一、单词讲解

1、operation   n. 手术 

单词operation 还有“操作、运营、行动”的意思，其实也不难理解，手术也是一种操作。

商业运作：business operation

营救行动：rescue operation

军事行动：military operation

2、following.  下一个的

同义的还有coming，也有表示“下一个的”意思，

例如：In the following/coming years, she will be racing for senior team

3、alone.  Adj.  独自的

When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange.

也可以当副词使用，例如：leave me alone  让我静静。

与lonely的区别

Alone: 指的是行为或者动作上的“单独”、“独自”

lonely：是指情感上的孤独、寂寞 。 如：I felt pretty lonely being on my own.

4、exchange.   n. 交换台，交换的意思，动词也是交换的意思。

交换生：exchange student

交换礼物：exchange gifts 

5、patient.  病人、有耐心的

做为名词，病人、患者的意思，做为形容词，有耐心的意思。

The doctor is very patient with his patient.

二、句型语法

1、加the的短语辨析

John Gilbert was in hospital.

In hospital. 住院  in the hospital 在医院里

In class. 上课      in the class 在教室里

In office. 在工作   in the office 在办公室里

Go to bed  去睡觉  go to the bed 去床边

Go to church. 去做礼拜  go to the church 去教堂

2、so的用法

用于believe/think/expect/suppose/guess后面

例：will Bob come?  I think so/ I don’t think so

用于hope/afraid 后面（仅用于肯定式）

例：i hope so/ i hope not

I am afraid so / I am afraid not

动词+so 替代 “动词+宾语”的结构

例：the doctor refused to do so

三、直接引语和间接引语

这个倒没多少说的，只是需要注意一点，直接引语变成间接引语时，时间词需要调整。

Yesterday —— the day before

Last week —— the week before

Next week —— the next week
